- Why does 3.785 L not come out as exactly 1 gallon?
- Because a US gallon is 3.785411784 L, not 3.785. The rounded figure gives 0.99989 gal — short by about 0.4 mL. That long decimal is not arbitrary: the gallon is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches, and the inch has been exactly 2.54 cm since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement.
- How different are US and imperial gallons?
- The imperial gallon is 4.54609 L against the US 3.785411784 L, roughly 20% larger. Fuel economy is where this bites hardest: the same car's mpg figure looks about 20% better quoted in UK gallons than US ones, with no change to the vehicle.
- Why does the larger imperial gallon hold smaller ounces?
- Because it is divided into 160 fluid ounces rather than 128. An imperial fluid ounce is 28.4130625 mL and a US one 29.5735295625 mL, so the bigger gallon has the smaller ounce. The fluid ounces shown here are US.
- Is there a third kind of gallon?
- Yes, the US dry gallon: 268.8025 cubic inches, or 4.40488 L. It survives in produce and grain measures — a dry quart of berries — and is interchangeable with neither liquid gallon. Nothing on a fuel pump or a milk carton uses it.
- How precise are the results?
- Values are trimmed to five decimals with trailing zeros dropped, and fluid ounces to three. For a 20 L container that is precision to roughly 0.04 mL, far past the point where the container's own moulding tolerance dominates the answer.

- Not choosing between US and imperial gallons, which differ by about 20%.
- Assuming a gallon is a gallon in a fuel-economy figure, which is where the two systems diverge most visibly.
