How to convert feet to meters

One foot is exactly 0.3048 meters. To convert, multiply the number of feet by 0.3048. For inches, multiply by 0.0254 and add to the feet result. For example, 6 ft 0 in = 1.8288 m, and 5 ft 11 in ≈ 1.803 m. The metric system is the international standard — used everywhere except the US, Liberia, and Myanmar for everyday measurements. Frequently Asked Questions

Is this conversion exact?: Yes, unlike the reverse. A foot is exactly 0.3048 m and an inch exactly 0.0254 m, so feet-to-metres is an exact multiplication. Going the other way needs 1/0.3048, which is 3.2808398950131… and never terminates — that direction can only ever be rounded.
Why are feet and inches separate fields?: Because 5 ft 11 in is not 5.11 ft, and typing it as one number is the single most common error in this conversion. Feet are divided into twelfths, not tenths: 5 ft 11 in is 5.9167 ft, or 1.8034 m, while 5.11 ft would be 1.5575 m — a difference of a quarter of a metre.
Where does the exact 0.3048 come from?: The 1959 international yard and pound agreement, which fixed the yard at exactly 0.9144 m across the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Before it, the US and imperial feet differed slightly, so pre-1959 engineering drawings can carry a real discrepancy.
Which countries still measure in feet?: For everyday use, essentially the United States, Liberia and Myanmar. Aviation is the striking exception: altitude is quoted in feet almost worldwide, including in fully metric countries, because the flight-level system standardised on them long before metrication.
Why show centimetres to three decimals?: Because the conversion is exact, so the decimals are real rather than noise — 6 ft is precisely 182.88 cm, not approximately. Rounding a height to the nearest centimetre is fine for a passport form and wrong for machining, and the tool leaves that judgement to you.
