Frequently Asked Questions
- Why can't my computer open a HEIC file?
- Because HEIC wraps HEVC-compressed images, and HEVC is patent-encumbered — so Windows charges for the codec extension and most browsers never shipped a decoder. Apple made it the iPhone default in iOS 11 for the file-size win, which is why the format is both ubiquitous and unopenable.
- How does the conversion work without a codec?
- The decoder is compiled to WebAssembly and runs inside the page, so the browser needs no native HEIC support at all. That is also why the first conversion pauses briefly — the WASM module has to load — and why everything after it is fast.
- Should I choose JPG or PNG?
- JPG for photographs, which is what almost every HEIC is — PNG is lossless and produces a file several times larger for no visible gain on a photo. Choose PNG only when the image has transparency or hard-edged graphics, both rare in a camera roll.
- What happens to Live Photos and depth data?
- They are lost. A HEIC container can hold multiple images, a depth map and the short video behind a Live Photo; JPG and PNG hold exactly one still each. The conversion extracts the primary image, which is the one shown in the gallery.
- Is EXIF metadata preserved?
- Not through a canvas round trip — the pixels are re-encoded and the metadata block is not carried across, so GPS coordinates, timestamps and camera settings are dropped. That is a privacy improvement for sharing and a real loss for archiving, so keep the originals if it matters.
Common errors and gotchas
- Expecting the same file size. HEIC is far more efficient, so JPEG at matched quality is larger.
- Re-encoding to JPEG and stacking a second generation of artefacts on the original.
- Losing depth or Live Photo data, which the older formats cannot carry.
- Losing HDR information, which converts to a flatter image than the original looked.
- Overlooking that a HEIC file can hold several images, of which a converter may take only the first.
