Frequently Asked Questions

Does converting to PNG restore the original quality?
No — AVIF is lossy, and PNG only losslessly stores whatever the decoder produced. You get a bigger file containing exactly the same visible detail, artefacts included. PNG is the right target for editing or for tools that cannot read AVIF, never for recovering quality.
Why did my transparent background turn white?
Because JPEG has no alpha channel, so the canvas is filled with white before the image is drawn — otherwise transparent pixels would come out black in most encoders. Choose PNG to keep transparency; there is no JPEG setting that can preserve it.
Does the quality slider affect PNG output?
No. PNG is lossless, and the browser's canvas encoder ignores the quality argument for it entirely — the slider only changes JPEG. For a smaller PNG, reduce the dimensions or the colour depth instead, since compression level is not exposed to web pages.
What metadata survives the conversion?
None of it. Drawing to a canvas produces raw pixels, so EXIF, GPS coordinates, capture date and any embedded ICC colour profile are all dropped. That is useful when stripping location data on purpose, and a real loss when the profile was doing the work — wide-gamut images can shift noticeably.
Why can't my browser open the AVIF at all?
Because decoding happens in the browser, using its own AVIF support. Chrome has had it since version 85, Firefox since 93 and Safari since 16.4, so an older browser reports that the image cannot be decoded. Nothing is uploaded, so the conversion is only ever as capable as the browser running it.

Common errors and gotchas

  • Expecting the same file size. AVIF is far more efficient, so the PNG or JPEG will be much larger.
  • Re-encoding a lossy AVIF to JPEG, which stacks a second generation of artefacts.
  • Losing transparency by converting to JPEG, which has no alpha channel.
  • Losing HDR or wide-gamut colour, which the older formats represent poorly or not at all.
  • Converting for the web, which discards the reason the asset was AVIF.
