Frequently Asked Questions

Why is squaring the linear factor necessary?: Because area is two-dimensional. 1 m is 100 cm, so 1 m² is 10,000 cm² — not 100. Forgetting to square the factor is the single most common error in area conversion, and it is off by a factor of 100.
How big is a hectare?: Exactly 10,000 m², a square 100 m on each side — roughly two football pitches. It is the standard metric land unit, and 100 hectares make one square kilometre.
How does an acre relate to it?: One acre is 4,046.86 m², about 0.405 hectares, so 2.47 acres make a hectare. Historically it was the area one man could plough in a day with an ox — which is why it is not a round number in any metric unit.
Which units are used for property?: It varies sharply by market: square feet in the US, India and Hong Kong; square metres across Europe; tsubo in Japan (3.306 m²); and ping in Taiwan. Comparing listings across markets without converting is meaningless.
Are square feet and feet squared the same?: No, and the distinction matters. 10 square feet is an area of 10 ft²; "10 feet squared" means a 10×10 square, which is 100 ft². The ambiguity in casual speech causes real errors in quotes and estimates.
Why does converting an area need care with rounded factors?: Because the linear factor is squared, so its rounding error is squared too. Using 2.5 cm per inch instead of 2.54 is a 1.6% linear error and about 3.2% on area — small slips compound faster in two dimensions.
Which land units differ by country?: Several. The bigha, kanal, marla and cent vary regionally within South Asia, and even the acre has historical variants. Unlike hectares and square metres, these have no single definition, so a conversion needs the local one.
