What this tool is used for
- Converting a downloaded WebP asset for a tool or an application that cannot open the format.
- Getting a lossless copy before editing an image saved as lossy WebP.
- Preparing an asset for a platform whose upload accepts PNG only.
- Extracting a still frame in a widely supported format.
- Producing a PNG for a document or a presentation where WebP support is unreliable.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Will converting WebP to PNG restore quality?
- Not if the WebP was lossy. Like JPEG, lossy WebP discards data permanently; PNG then stores those exact pixels, artefacts included, in a larger file. Lossless WebP converts to PNG with no change at all.
- How do I tell lossy from lossless WebP?
- By the internal chunk: lossy uses VP8, lossless uses VP8L, and VP8X indicates extended features like animation or alpha. The file extension is identical either way, which is why the distinction surprises people.
- Why convert away from WebP at all?
- Compatibility with older software. WebP is universally supported in browsers now, but many desktop applications, print workflows and older phones still cannot open it — PNG opens everywhere.
- Is transparency preserved?
- Yes. WebP supports an 8-bit alpha channel in both lossy and lossless modes, and PNG supports the same, so transparency survives the conversion intact.
- What about animated WebP?
- PNG cannot hold animation, so only a single frame survives — usually the first. Converting an animated WebP to APNG or GIF preserves the motion; converting to PNG silently discards it.
- Which browsers and tools still lack WebP support?
- Very few browsers now, but plenty of desktop software does — older image editors, some print workflows and many email clients. That gap, not quality, is the usual reason to convert back.
- Does an animated WebP become an animated PNG?
- Only if the converter targets APNG; a single-frame conversion silently keeps the first frame and discards the rest. Check the frame count before assuming an animation survived.
- How does WebP's transparency differ from PNG's?
- Lossy WebP stores alpha in a separate lossless channel, so transparency is exact even when colour is not. Converting to PNG makes both exact, which is why the file grows sharply.
Common errors and gotchas
- Expecting quality to improve. If the WebP was lossy, its artefacts carry straight into the PNG.
- Being caught by the size increase, since PNG on photographic content is far larger than WebP.
- Losing an animation. An animated WebP has many frames and a PNG holds one.
- Assuming transparency is preserved by every converter, when some flatten the alpha channel onto white.
- Converting for the web, which usually undoes the reason the asset was WebP in the first place.
