WPM, CPM, and accuracy explained

Words per minute (WPM) uses the chars/5 standard — every 5 characters count as one word, regardless of actual word length. The Live Testmode shows a passage, starts timing on "Start Test", and scores your WPM + accuracy at the end of the selected duration. Frequently Asked Questions

How is WPM calculated here?: Words divided by elapsed minutes, counting actual words. The formal standard defines a word as five characters, which is what CPM divided by five approximates — the two figures differ on text with unusual word lengths.
How is accuracy measured?: Character by character against the passage, so every position that does not match counts as an error. That is stricter than word-level scoring: one wrong letter early in a line marks only that character, not the whole word.
What is a good typing speed?: Around 40 WPM is average for an adult, 60 to 80 is a proficient touch typist, and above 100 is genuinely fast. Professional transcription work typically expects 70 or more with high accuracy.
Should I chase speed or accuracy?: Accuracy. A mistake costs the keystroke, the backspace and the retype, so error-prone fast typing is slower in net terms. Speed follows from accurate muscle memory, which is why lessons hold you at a comfortable pace.
Why does my score vary between tests?: Because the text matters. Familiar prose types faster than technical vocabulary, and passages heavy in numbers, capitals or punctuation are slower because they need the shift key and the number row.
What is CPM for?: Characters per minute, which is a fairer comparison across languages — German compounds and English monosyllables give very different word counts for the same effort. It is the standard metric in several non-English typing communities.
