How frequency and wave period conversions are computed
Frequency represents the count of wave cycles occurring per second (Hz). Period (T) describes the duration of a single wave cycle and is the mathematical reciprocal of frequency:T = 1 / f.
Wavelength (λ) calculates the spatial length of a wave cycle based on propagation speeds:λ = v / f, where v represents transmission speeds (such as the speed of light or sound waves in air and water).

What this tool is used for
- Converting a frequency between Hz, kHz, MHz and GHz.
- Checking a radio or WiFi band's frequency in another unit.
- Converting an audio frequency for a specification.
- Comparing two figures quoted in different units.
- Converting an optical frequency for a calculation.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a hertz?
- One cycle per second — the SI unit, named for Heinrich Hertz. It is dimensionally the inverse of time, which is why the conversions to kHz, MHz and GHz are plain decimal steps of a thousand with no awkward factors anywhere.
- How do frequency and wavelength relate?
- Through the wave speed: λ = c / f. In vacuum that gives a 100 MHz FM signal a 3-metre wavelength, which is why the antenna is the size it is — antenna length is a fraction of wavelength, and that is the whole reason low frequencies need big antennas.
- What does RPM convert to?
- Divide by 60 for hertz — 3,000 RPM is 50 Hz. Rotational speed and frequency are the same quantity in different units, which is why a motor's rated speed and the mains frequency driving it are directly related.
- Why is CPU clock speed no longer a useful comparison?
- Because work per cycle diverged. Instructions per clock, core count, cache and memory bandwidth all changed independently, so a 3 GHz chip from two generations apart differs enormously in throughput. The number stopped tracking performance around the mid-2000s.
- What is the audible range?
- Roughly 20 Hz to 20 kHz for a young adult, with the upper limit falling steadily with age — often to 15 kHz by middle age. That range is why 44.1 kHz sampling exists: Nyquist requires more than twice the highest frequency you intend to reproduce.
Common errors and gotchas
- Slipping a factor of a thousand between prefixes, which is easy across three steps.
- Confusing frequency with wavelength, which are inversely related through the wave speed.
- Mixing a sample rate with a frequency, where the Nyquist limit is half the rate.
- Assuming a band's name matches its exact frequency, since 2.4 GHz WiFi spans a range.
- Treating a clock frequency as a data rate, which encoding changes.
