- How do applicant tracking systems read a résumé?
- By extracting text, which is why layout choices become parsing choices. Multi-column layouts, text inside images, headers and footers, and tables all extract in an order nobody intended. A single-column document with conventional section headings extracts correctly in every system.
- PDF or Word?
- PDF unless the posting asks otherwise — it preserves layout everywhere and every current ATS parses it. The old advice to send .docx dates from parsers that genuinely could not read PDFs, which has not been broadly true for years. What still matters is that the PDF contains real text, not a scan.
- How long should it be?
- One page for under ten years of experience, two beyond that. The constraint is useful rather than arbitrary: it forces the selection that a reader spending under a minute is going to make anyway, and a third page is almost never read at all.
- What makes a bullet point work?
- A verb, a specific thing, and an outcome with a number where one honestly exists. "Reduced build time from 14 minutes to 3 by parallelising the test suite" says what "Responsible for build performance" cannot — and the number is what makes it checkable in an interview.
- Is my data uploaded anywhere?
- No — the document is assembled in your browser and nothing is transmitted. A résumé is a concentrated set of personal data: full name, contact details, employment history and often an address, which is precisely the payload you would not want sitting on someone else's server.
Common errors and gotchas
- Using a heavily designed multi-column layout, which applicant tracking systems parse badly or not at all.
- Putting essential information in a header, footer or text box that a parser skips.
- Exporting as an image-based PDF, which makes the whole document invisible to a keyword search.
- Including a photograph where local hiring norms advise against it.
- Losing the data by closing the tab, since nothing is stored anywhere.
