How Carbon Emissions Are Measured
Greenhouse gas footprints are quantified in metric tonnes of Carbon Dioxide equivalent ($CO_2e$) per year. This incorporates other warming gases like methane ($CH_4$) and nitrous oxide ($N_2O$).

- What does a tonne of CO₂ actually represent?
- Roughly 4,000 km driven in an average petrol car, or one economy return flight from London to New York. The global average footprint is around 4.5 tonnes per person per year, against roughly 15 in the US — and the target consistent with 1.5 °C is closer to 2.
- Why is CO₂-equivalent used rather than CO₂?
- Because methane and nitrous oxide trap far more heat per molecule — methane about 28 times over a century, nitrous oxide around 265. CO₂e converts them into the amount of CO₂ that would cause the same warming, which is what makes a single total meaningful.
- Which choices actually move the number?
- Flying, driving, home heating and diet dominate almost every personal footprint. A long-haul return flight can exceed a year of careful recycling. That is not an argument against small changes, but the arithmetic is worth seeing before optimising the small ones first.
- How accurate can a personal estimate be?
- Indicative at best. Emission factors vary enormously by electricity grid, vehicle, supply chain and methodology, and the same activity can differ two- or threefold between regions. Use it to compare your own choices against each other rather than as an absolute number.
- Do carbon offsets cancel emissions?
- Only partly, and the quality varies wildly. Investigations have found many forestry offsets credit carbon that would have been stored anyway, and the storage is reversible in a fire. Reduction is the reliable action; offsetting is a supplement with real verification problems.
