How Words per Page Is Calculated

Page count is estimated by dividing your total word count by an average words-per-page figure, which depends on font, font size, and line spacing. A standard double-spaced page in 12pt Times New Roman holds roughly 250 words, while the same page single-spaced holds roughly 500 — because line spacing roughly doubles the vertical space each line occupies without changing how many words fit per line. Sans-serif fonts like Arial are slightly wider per character, so they fit a few percent fewer words per page than Times New Roman at the same point size. These figures are estimates: actual results vary with margins, paragraph breaks, headings, and page size, so treat the output as a planning guide rather than an exact typesetting count. Switch to "Paste text" to count words directly from your draft, or enter a known word count and pick the preset that matches your document's formatting requirements (e.g. many academic and publishing guidelines specify 12pt Times New Roman, double-spaced).
