Is Y counted as a vowel?

No — the vowel set is a, e, i, o, u, so y is counted as a consonant. English is genuinely ambiguous here: y is a vowel in "rhythm" and "my" and a consonant in "yellow", and no single rule gets both right, so the conventional five are used.

What counts as a letter?

Letters are separated from digits, spaces and punctuation, so the totals add up to the full length. Accented and non-Latin letters count as letters; whether é is a vowel depends on the language, so it is classified by its base letter where that is clear.

What is a normal vowel ratio?

English prose runs around 38–40% vowels. Much lower usually means abbreviations, code or a language like Czech or Polish; much higher suggests Hawaiian, Japanese romaji or Italian. It is a quick fingerprint for what kind of text you are looking at.

Why would anyone count these?

Word games and puzzle construction, checking a password or identifier is pronounceable, phonetics coursework, and estimating syllables — since syllable count tracks vowel groups closely enough to be a useful first approximation.

Are consecutive vowels counted separately?

Yes: "queue" has five characters and four vowels, even though it is one syllable. Counting vowel *sounds* rather than vowel letters is a different and much harder problem — use a syllable counter for that.

How do the counts differ across languages?

Considerably. Hawaiian runs above 50% vowels and Georgian well below 40%, so a ratio that looks abnormal for English can be entirely normal elsewhere — the measure is only meaningful against a same-language baseline.

• Treating y as always a consonant or always a vowel, when it is both depending on the word.
