What is Title Case?
Title Case capitalizes the first letter of each significant word while leaving short function words — articles, conjunctions, and short prepositions like a, of, and, and the— lowercase, except when they begin or end the title. This tool lowercases each word first and then capitalizes it, so it won't preserve intentional capitals in acronyms or camelCase. Everything is processed in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Which words are kept lowercase?
- A 23-word AP-style set — a, an, and, as, at, but, by, for, if, in, nor, of, off, on, or, per, so, the, to, up, via, vs, yet — and only in the middle of a line. The first and last word are always capitalised, so "what is it for" becomes "What Is It For".
- Why did NASA come back as Nasa?
- Each word is lower-cased before its first letter is raised, so deliberate capitals inside a word are lost: NASA → Nasa, iPhone → Iphone, McDonald → Mcdonald. Restore those by hand — nothing can reliably tell an acronym from a shouted word.
- Is this AP style or Chicago?
- Closest to AP. Chicago lowercases every preposition whatever its length, while AP capitalises those of four letters or more — "Gone With the Wind" in AP against "Gone with the Wind" in Chicago. The list here holds only short function words, matching AP.
- How does it treat multiple lines?
- Each line is title-cased on its own, so a list of headlines each get the first-and-last-word rule. A subtitle after a colon is not a fresh start, though: "the lord of the rings: the two towers" keeps that second "the" lowercase.
- Are quotes and brackets handled?
- Yes. The first letter is capitalised rather than the first character, so 'tis becomes 'Tis and (hello) becomes (Hello). Punctuation is also stripped before the small-word list is consulted, so a trailing comma on "of," does not defeat the match.
- Which words stay lowercase in title case?
- Articles, short prepositions and coordinating conjunctions — unless they are the first or last word, which are always capitalised. The exact list differs between the AP, Chicago and MLA styles, which is why two correct results can disagree.
Common errors and gotchas
- Capitalising every word including articles and prepositions, which is not title case.
- Lower-casing an acronym, which turns HTTP into Http.
- Losing intentional casing in a brand name or a proper noun.
- Applying English small-word rules to another language, where they do not apply.
- Assuming one convention, since Chicago, AP and MLA disagree on several rules.
