Frequently Asked Questions

Does this actually vectorise the image?
It traces shapes rather than embedding pixels, which is the meaningful distinction. A tracer finds edges and fits paths to them, so the result scales — but it is an interpretation of the bitmap, not a recovery of an original vector that never existed.
What kind of image traces well?
Flat colour with hard edges: logos, icons, line art, scanned signatures. Photographs trace badly because every gradient becomes hundreds of paths, producing a file far larger than the JPEG and worse looking.
Why is my traced file enormous?
Because the tracer found more distinct regions than you expected — noise, anti-aliasing and JPEG artefacts all become real edges to it. Reducing the colour count and cleaning the source first cuts the path count dramatically.
Can I recover the original vector from a PNG export?
No. Rasterising discards the paths permanently, and tracing produces different geometry that merely looks similar — usually with far more nodes than a person would have drawn. If the original vector exists anywhere, that is always the better source.
What is the alternative for a photograph?
Embedding it. An SVG can carry a raster image as a data URI, giving you an `.svg` file that scales only as well as its contents. That is sometimes what a workflow requires, and it is worth knowing it is a container change rather than a conversion.

Common errors and gotchas

  • Vectorising a photograph, which produces thousands of paths and a file larger than the original.
  • Expecting clean paths from a lossy source, where compression noise becomes path detail.
  • Leaving the colour count high on a flat graphic, which adds paths without adding fidelity.
  • Assuming the output is editable by hand, when traced paths rarely correspond to shapes a person would draw.
  • Treating tracing as a substitute for the original vector, which is always better if it exists.
