The ASCII character set
ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) maps the numbers 0–127 to characters. Codes 0–31 and 127 are non-printing control characters like LF (line feed, 10) and ESC (escape, 27); 32 is the space; and 33–126 are the printable letters, digits, and punctuation. Every byte here is shown in decimal, hexadecimal, octal, and 8-bit binary so you can cross-reference encodings at a glance.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Why does ASCII stop at 127?
- Because it is a 7-bit encoding — the eighth bit was originally a parity bit for error checking on serial links. That spare bit is what every later 8-bit extension claimed, and why they all disagree.
- What are the first 32 codes for?
- Control characters from the teletype era — carriage return, line feed, tab, bell, form feed. Most are obsolete, but the handful still in use are the reason text files differ between operating systems.
- Why is there a 32 gap between upper and lowercase?
- Because it is a single bit. Setting bit 5 turns `A` into `a`, so case conversion is one bitwise operation — a deliberate design choice that made 1960s hardware simpler.
- Is ASCII still relevant?
- Very — it is the first 128 code points of Unicode unchanged, so ASCII text is valid UTF-8 with no conversion. That compatibility is a large part of why UTF-8 won.
- What is extended ASCII?
- A misleading name for any of several incompatible 8-bit sets — Latin-1, Windows-1252, code page 437. There is no single extended ASCII, which is precisely why mojibake was so common before Unicode.
Common errors and gotchas
- Assuming ASCII covers characters above 127, which it does not.
- Confusing the control characters' abbreviations with their functions.
- Reading a decimal value as hex or the reverse, which the table shows side by side for a reason.
- Treating DEL at 127 as a control character grouped with the others, which is a teletype artefact.
- Assuming a byte value maps to the same character in every encoding.
